Las mariposas monarcas (Danaus plexippus) son nativas de América del Norte y América del Sur. Sin embargo, en el siglo XVII se esparcieron a otras partes del mundo. Las monarcas fueron vistas primero en Hawai en los años 1840’s y posteriormente en muchas islas del Pacífico Sur entre 1850 y 1860 (Ackery y Vane-Wright, 1984). A inicios de la década de 1870, se reportaron las primeras monarcas en Australia y Nueva Zelanda (Gibbs, 1994). No queda claro exactamente cómo y por qué ocurrió esta migración. Una posibilidad es que las monarcas hayan sido transportadas en navíos, ya sea como larvas que se encontraban a bordo en las plantas quiebramuelas localizadas en los astilleros o como adultas desembarcadas de navíos que realizaban travesías marítimas. Es muy probable que el proceso haya involucrado la intervención humana, pero no se sabe hasta que punto.
