CARACOLERO

El Caracolero Común (Rostrhamus sociabilis) es natural de las Américas. Su distribución comprende desde el sur de los Estados Unidos, en la Florida, a través de América Central, hasta Argentina. También se encuentra presente en Cuba. Se le considera común en algunos lugares. El Caracolero es un ave sedentaria.Habita en las marismas, pantanos, márgenes de los cursos de agua y en los manglares. Se le documenta hasta los 1000 metros de elevación.Se mantiene solitario y en pequeños grupos.Cuando pesca vuela a unos diez metros sobre el nivel del agua.La pareja anida solitaria o en colonias dispersas. Es posible que aniden dos veces en el mismo año. El nido lo construye en los árboles no muy altos; usualmente lo hace de uno a tres metros del suelo. Emplea ramas secas y ramas verdes con hojas en su elaboración. La nidada usual es de dos a cuatro huevos blancos que pueden estar manchados de castaño. La incubación toma de 26 a 30 días y es efectuada por los dos padres. Los pichones dejan el nido de los 24 a 28 días.Alcanzan la madurez a los dos años. Se le estima una longevidad de unos 15 años.La alimentación básica consiste de caracoles de agua dulce. Complementa su dieta con crustáceos. Cuando obtiene un caracol se traslada a una percha favorita donde se come el molusco en el interior mientras lo sostiene con una pata. Después que termina suelta el caracol que pasa a ser uno más entre los cientos de caracoles en el suelo bajo la percha.Este caracolero alcanza una longitud de 41 a 45 cm. Las alas llegan a tener una envergadura de unos 118 cm. El pico es bien corvo hacia abajo, el culmen (mandíbula superior del pico) termina en una punta bien aguda.Al Caracolero Común también se le llama “Caracolero”, “Elanio Caracolero” y “Gavilán Caracolero”. En inglés se le conoce por “Snail Kite”, en muchas referencias lo hemos visto como “Everglades Kite”. En portugués se le llama “Caramujeiro”.
